Amazon Elastic Transcoder is media transcoding in the cloud. It is designed to be a highly scalable, easy to use and a cost effective way for developers and businesses to convert (or “transcode”) media files (Stored on Amazon S3 Bucket) from their source format into versions that will playback on devices like smartphones, tablets and PCs.

Elastic Transcoder has four components:

  1. Pipelines are queues that manage the transcoding jobs. During create a job, we have to specify the pipeline to which we want to add the job. AWS Elastic Transcoder starts processing the jobs in a pipeline in the order in which we added them.
  2. A preset is a template that contains the settings that we want Elastic Transcoder to apply during the transcoding process, for example, the number of audio channels or video resolution etc. When we create a job, we have to specify which preset we want to use. There are few system define presets .We can also add presets for other output formats.
  3. A job does the work of transcoding a media file from one format into another format. When we create a job, we specify the information that Elastic Transcoder needs to perform the transcoding: which file to transcode, what to name the transcoded file, which preset to use and so on.
